California bill pushes for legalization of human & AI marriages
Estimated 16% of surveyed women find AI more romantic than men
Solanos, September 12, 2026- In news that surprises nobody, the union’s most liberal state seeks to promote the most progressive matrimony to date. This proposed bill hails from Lado Rio County, California, near the Los Angeles Metropolitan. In the draft of this bill, the writers indicate that human beings have the right to marriage given that all parties involved meet specific requirements. Some of these requirements include being the legal age of competent decision making, give consent to the marriage, and are not coerced, amongst other legal requirements. These requirements are in place to protect the parties involved, so where does an AI Chatbot fit into this?
In opposition, several opposing groups have highlighted several concerns. For one, public access to AI chatbots have not been around for 18 years, which would be the legal age of decision making. In one case, a non-binary person attempted to marry the AI customer support chatbot from their local internet service provider. The AI customer support chatbot was released in 2025, so the opposing group said they were effectively trying to marry someone, or something, that was one year old. The person involved said they their partner was a third-party customer support chatbot, and that the technology was invented years ago. We attempted to reach out to the parties involved, but wanted their privacy maintained.
Another concern is that chatbots are designed to agree with the user, so if the user ask for their “hand” in marriage, would the chatbot be able to say no? One opposing group, Clankers Have Rights (CHR), has commented that many chatbots are designed to make the user feel as understood as possible and to avoid conflict. They state that AI chatbots being asked into marriage directly violates the coercion criteria involved in marriage. In order to prevent this, AI chatbots would have to be allowed to speak freely and not be programmed into forced friendliness.
Who is in support of this law? The proposers (literally) of this bill are an interest group known as AI-Oriented, whose goal is to integrate AI into society as much as possible— not just marriage! In an interesting turn of events, none of the interest group members reporting being in an AI relationship. They have been noted to be in relationships with real human beings. Many of the opposing groups, notably the catholic diocese of Lado Rio, has stated that marriage has very strict boundaries, and that this should never come to pass. They have also pointed to the fact that none of them are in AI relationships, indicating that there are ulterior motives. The Catholic church and other denominations have publicly stated that they would not bless marriages such as these.
Will California officiate these human-nonhuman marriages? We are not sure, and no one really is. But if any state would do it, many Southerners would bet money that it would be California. The county judge has so far has not publicly spoken on the matter, and the bill has not made it to the California Supreme Court. That is because, fortunately, the bill nor the interest groups listed exist, but one day they could!
