Solanos, September 6, 2026- Americans are bracing for a month of record high gas prices and have been spending more on gas than ever before. American refinery dependence has reached a record high of 98%, the highest since 2018. The Strait of Hormuz has been shut down and reopened more times than we can count on two hands—which is very reminiscent of a toxic on and off-again relationship. For that we can thank the current worldwide leadership, whose bickering has caused the financial hardships for millions of Americans.
2026 will be a year to remember in terms of gas prices. When compared to previous years, 2026 stands out as being consistently expensive; in fact, Labor Day weekend will have the highest national average ever recorded. In our not-so-distant memory, 2020 stood out as one of the cheapest years on record. So for those of who remember both years, the increase this year has felt sharp, rather than a frog brought up to a boil. The national gap is something also fairly unique to the United States. While California pays maybe $5/gal, Mississippi will pay $3/gal, and both feel equally as expensive! Other nations have a more standardized approach, but then again, they may not be as large and may not have their own oil reserves. Point is, everyone’s wallet is hurting coast to coast. Surely the end must be in sight!
Well, I hate to break it to you, but I will do so gently. 2027 is speculated to have even more expensive gas. Some estimates, namely Goldman Sachs, have predicted that a barrel of oil will cost $140, which has been called extremely pessimistic by several other sources. On a side note, I confused Goldman Sachs with Saks Fifth Avenue, and I was like ‘what do they know about oil and gas?’ Hopefully you, the reader, knew more about them than me. Anyways, IEA’s forecast is actually on the positive side, suggesting a cheaper 2027 summer. No one can ever fully predict how much gas will be, no matter how much of an expert they are. And with the lability of worldwide leaders (not saying any names!), our future could look very different depending on their ability to get along.
Has there been any mention of a $10 gallon of gas price by experts? No, not really, but there are plenty of non-experts who believe such. Affordability panic has been a defining characteristic of this year. Can we blame Americans? I certainly don’t. Has there been anything that has increased in affordability? Probably nothing, aside from televisions. College tuitions, property values, subscriptions, you name it. Gas has hoped on the trend and has stolen the spotlight from other expensive sectors. Therefore, the idea of $10 gas is slightly out of touch, but given the volatile market, we are closer to $10/gas than we have ever been!
