Movie theater attendance rises drastically as streaming falls

Solanos, August 18,2026- Cinema is one of the world’s most appreciated, profitable and recognizable forms of art. Since its genesis in the early 20th century, it has been on a drastic uphill that will probably continue to rise for as long as humans have vision. This multibillion, perhaps trillion, dollar industry has infiltrated nearly every culture on the globe.

The way we have watched it though, has changed. It began in movie theaters, a concept that has not fallen away. Then with the ingenious concept of movies at home, conceived by Netflix, the way we watch movies shifted and the market share split. Would you like to watch movies alongside the sinful public? Or would you like to watch a movie in the sanctuary of your own home? Tough call, for no one. Then, when O’ you of little faith thought the game was set in stone, Netflix once again reimagined our viewing. Instead of materialized media, they introduced the concept of streaming. An era we still live in today, although that soon may be changing…

2026 has proven a powerful year for the film industry. The general public has flocked to the movie theaters and have canceled subscription services en masse. Sitting in a movie theatre with your community is in again, baby. The Odyssey, Super Mario Movie, Obsession, Backrooms, Toy Story 5, Michael Jackson, Project Hail Mary, Spiderman, Dune III, to name a few, largely contribute to this.

So, what could be causing this? Like all things in life, this is multifaceted. For one, people have missed the experience of the movie theater. The lounge chairs are comfortable, the food is good, it can be a date, solo trip or family time. You are busy, because you are there, you are not at home. You have set aside time for the movie. Your phone is on DND. You are immersed in the surround sound, viewing it in HD on a screen taller than your home. On a slight tangent, the American public misses a sense of community, so doing a single activity together with strangers can provide that. One contributing factor is the erroneous ways of streaming. They became what they sought to destroy. No ads! Comfort of your own home! Easy! Cheap! Well, the years have that have sailed away. There are ads in nearly all streaming platforms, unless you want to pay a pretty penny, or nowadays a gorgeous nickel. All your favorite shows are splint amongst 2-5 streaming services. Forget it if you are also into sports. Imagine paying for Netflix, Disney, Fox Sports, Hulu and HBO Max? Might as well call DirectTV back. If you have more than two TVs in your home, uh-oh! You need to upgrade. She has tasted prosperity on her lips; her heart has turned to greed yet is surprised when her paths are lonesome and her ways wicked.

As for me and my family, we will be at the movie theater, paying too much probably. One thing can be said, movie theaters have always been what they’ve been, and they are not what they are not. They know their role in the global economy and their role in the entertainment industry.
